Tips to Grow Lotus

  1. Lotus can be grown by two methods- By seeds and by tubers.
  2. The soil should be 2 parts clay and 1 part river sand.
  3. By Seeds: Soak the seeds before planting, until seeds have started to sprout. seeds should start to sprout after 4 or 5 days of soaking. Now fill a container with 6 inch of deep soil.  Set the seedlings just on top, then brush a light layer of soil over them to secure them. Lotus are aquatic plants, so the soil should always have at least 2 to 4 inches of water above it.
  4. By Tubers: Arrange a lotus tuber online, or at a local nursery or garden center. Place your tuber gently on the surface of the water. Place your pot near a sunny window. A lotus will grow as large as the area in which it is planted. So arrange a big container and fill it with soil mixture of 60% clay and 40% river sand. Leave about 3 to 4 inches between the top of the soil and the rim of your container. Press the tuber into the top of the soil. Lower your container 6 to 12 inches below the surface of your pond.
  5. Pond tablets are fertilizer made especially for aquatic plants. Wait until your tuber has developed at least 6 leaves before fertilizing it, and don’t place the fertilizer directly against the tuber itself.
  6. After 13 months enjoy the beauty and scent of your lotus plant.
