Tips to Grow Hyacinth
- Arrange good quality hyacinth bulbs.
- The soil should be well drained, moderately fertile and moist but not wet.
- Plant the bulbs 4 inches deep and a minimum of 3 inches apart. Set the bulb in the hole with the pointy end up. Hyacinth bulbs may be forced into early growth for indoor display in the winter. Plant them with the tips just showing, in soil-based potting mix in containers with drainage holes.
- We can add compost for better growth.
- The hyacinths are ready to harvest when the flower cluster is showing definite color and at least one of the bells has separated from the cluster. The next step is to cut the plant out of the bulb and leave the base of the bulb attached. With the base of the bulb still attached, the plant develops better flowers.
- WARNING: Hyacinth bulbs contain a substance called oxalic acid, which can be irritating to bare skin. Use gloves when handling these bulbs for extended periods.
